The Reality of Obamacare Wednesday, March 24, 2010 First: Congratulations to President Obama and the Democratic leadership. You won dirty against bipartisan opposition from both Congress and the majority of Americans. You've definitely polarized the country even more, and quite possibly bankrupted us, too. But hey, you won. Bubbly for everyone. It's a Civil War: What We Do Now Tuesday, March 23, 2010 A terrible thing happened to America on Sunday, March 21, 2010. The country took its biggest step ever down a road diametrically opposed to its original intent of keeping the state small so that the individual can be free and great. Obamacare: This is what socialism looks like Tuesday, March 23, 2010 The passage of the health care bill was a sad spectacle. Bart Stupak is the new Pro-Life Judas. Like a car wreck it was fascinating and repulsive at the same time. History may look back upon March 21, 2010 as the day America died. It Will Not Stand Monday, March 22, 2010 Members of the House of Representatives tonight approved President Obama’s health care agenda, the biggest expansion of government power since the Great Society. The Obama health care legislation is universal in scope and will profoundly impact the personal lives of more than 300 million Americans. It will restrict our personal freedom while undercutting the independence and authority of the several states. Health Care Reform: Costly Change Thursday, March 18, 2010 If you look back at the president's campaign rhetoric, changing the world's greatest health care system was supposed to be about cutting costs. That "cost cutting" sure turned out to be expensive. Send in the Goons Tuesday, March 16, 2010 The SEIU is threatening to back primary challengers to Democratic congressmen who oppose ObamaCare. Health care reform is not about helping people Monday, March 15, 2010 President Obama and this administration are using dog and pony show tactics of parading suffering Americans around to push through his health care reform. One such woman named Natoma Canfield is a cancer survivor. Obama's liberal base 'disengaged' Thursday, March 11, 2010 Is President Obama losing his base? Liberal and progressive organizations that helped propel him to the White House are turning on him now, little more than a year after he took office. Their collective discontent, on issues from health care to nuclear energy to the handling of terrorism suspects, could mean bad news for Democrats during this fall's congressional elections. Is Health Care a Right? Wednesday, March 10, 2010 Most politicians, and probably most Americans, see health care as a right. Thus, whether a person has the means to pay for medical services or not, he is nonetheless entitled to them. Let's ask ourselves a few questions about this vision. A 'great day' for Harry Reid; a bad day for America Monday, March 8, 2010 This past Friday, the not-so-honorable Senate Majority Leader proclaimed that it was a great day in America. He was, of course, referring to the fact that the BLS jobs report revealed that America "only" lost 36,000 jobs last month. A great day? Just how thick are those rose-colored glasses, Harry? Obama's Perverse Priorities Tuesday, March 2, 2010 When Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind) announced his retirement, the media revived their drumbeat that our government is broken. As the indispensable Brent Bozell pointed out last week, Democrats and the media only complain of broken government when the liberals can’t get their agenda enacted. Dems' Health Strategy Doesn't Add Up to a Win Monday, March 1, 2010 "More talk, no deal" was The Wall Street Journal's headline on Thursday's Blair House health care summit. "After summit flop, Democrats prepare to go it alone on Obamacare," proclaimed the headline here at The Washington Examiner. These were appropriate verdicts if you viewed the summit as an attempt to reach bipartisan agreement or even a limited consensus. Behind The Impasse: An Ideological Gap Wednesday, February 24, 2010 The nation seems polarized, Washington is gridlocked, Republicans don't want anything to do with the president's policies, and even Democrats, who control Congress by big margins, can't pass long-sought initiatives. What gives? For conservatives, a new beginning Friday, February 19, 2010 An estimated 10,000 conservative activists, thinkers, public officials and movement grandees from around the nation convene here today for the 2010 Conservative Political Action Conference, the long-running political Woodstock of the Right. The president vs. reality Thursday, February 18, 2010 President Obama yesterday declared his $787 billion economic-stimulus plan a rousing success on its first anniversary -- claiming that it had created or saved 2 million jobs and averted a second Great Depression. Democrats quick to drop Obama's calls for party unity Friday, January 29, 2010 Despite the enthusiastic applause President Obama received from his party during his State of the Union speech, his influence over House and Senate Democrats has weakened considerably as lawmakers begin to panic over the midterm elections 10 months away. Not Dead Yet Thursday, January 28, 2010 Like a movie vampire, big-government health reform keeps coming back to sink its teeth into a resistant America's throat. Voter power has left the Democrats' plans near dead, but near isn't good enough. Obama’s Populist Impersonation of Truman Can’t Possibly Work Wednesday, January 27, 2010 Barack Obama’s embarrassing new attempt to channel Harry Truman with his angry populist appeals is doomed to failure for three reasons: wrong guy, wrong Congress and wrong country. Anger all around for Democratic leaders Wednesday, January 27, 2010 President Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will be all smiles as the president arrives at the Capitol for his State of the Union speech Wednesday night, but the happy faces can’t hide relationships that are fraying and fraught. A Lesson from James Madison About Obamanomics Monday, January 25, 2010 Breaking news: Barack Obama is human. He is not a “messiah,” he is not omniscient, and he is not capable, all on his own, of “fixing everything” that is wrong with America. Silver: Dems likely to lose seven Senate seats, gain none Monday, January 25, 2010 Nate Silver has unveiled his algorithms for rating the chances of each party in this year’s Senate races. This replaces his seat-of-the-pants ratings which seemed to me to be unduly optimistic for his side (the Democrats). Silver’s numbers attempt to show the percentage likelihood of each party winning the seat, taking into account poll results, candidates’ ratings and the likelihood of candidates to win their parties’ nominations. In Massachusetts, Scott Brown Rides a Political Perfect Storm Monday, January 18, 2010 Scott Brown, wearing a dark suit, blue shirt and red stripe tie in the mild winter air, stood a few yards in front of a statue of Paul Revere and directly across the street from St. Stephen's Church, where Rose Kennedy's funeral Mass was celebrated in 1995, telling about 200 gleeful voters that they had a chance to rearrange a political universe. The crowd spilled across the sidewalk onto the narrow street that cuts through the heart of the city's North End, the local cannoli capital, located in Ward 3 that Barack Obama carried 2 to 1 just 15 months ago. Liberalism is What is Killing California Monday, January 18, 2010 WASHINGTON -- Dalton Trumbo (1905-1976) was a hero to the American left, partly because of his 1939 anti-war novel "Johnny Got His Gun." Trumbo's title modified the lyric "Johnny get your gun" from the World War I song "Over There." Trumbo's "Johnny" is horribly maimed in that war. Now we need a novel titled "Berkeley Got Its Liberalism." Pending that, we have Tad Friend's report, in the Jan. 4 New Yorker, on maimed Berkeley. Democrats behaving badly Wednesday, January 13, 2010 It's a continuing wonder, really, that anyone at the pinnacle of American politics can be as tone deaf as NevadaDemocratHarry Reid. The Senate majority leader has called President George W. Bush a "loser" and a "liar," declared the Iraq war "lost" shortly before U.S. fortunes changed, referred to former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan as a "political hack" and said "you could literally smell" the summer tourists who flock to the Capitol. Harry Reid, Liberalism & Race Monday, January 11, 2010 Harry Reid is developing a well-deserved reputation for playing the race card. Last month he accused opponents of his secret healthcare bill of being the same as those who opposed ending slavery. It was a highly objectionable historical analogy based on extremely flawed logic. Those who are fighting to stop ObamaCare are upholding the ideal of freedom -- from government intrusion, confiscatory taxation and oppressive debt. Hugh Hewitt: A Massachusetts miracle? Monday, January 11, 2010 Scott Brown is an impressive candidate -- intelligent, experienced, good-humored and handsome. Brown's record of public service is distinguished as well. Not only is he in his third term as a state senator, he served three terms before that as a state representative. More impressive than even that, however, is his service in uniform. Exodus For Dodd, Ritter, Dorgan Wednesday, January 6, 2010 Bad news comes in threes. Just hours after Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) announced his retirement, Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter notified his campaign that he, too, would not seek re-election. Late tonight, aides to Chris Dodd sent word that the long-time senator from Connecticut would also be stepping aside. GOP Should Push Education and Pro-Family Tax Reform Monday, January 4, 2010 Karl Rove had some good advice for Republicans in his year-end Wall Street Journal column. "It won't be enough to surf voter dissatisfaction with Mr. Obama and Democrats," he wrote. "Voters will want to know what Republican candidates would do." Forever Gone Wednesday, December 23, 2009 Any law can be repealed, but the Democrats' radical health bill contains unprecedented language that could wreck the U.S. health system permanently. It's one of the dirtiest tricks yet. Obama Climate-Change Goals Hurt Recovery Tuesday, December 22, 2009 President Barack Obama's weak Copenhagen accord may make it harder for Congress to pass punitive cap-and-trade legislation that requires greenhouse- gas emission cuts. A recent Gallup Poll showed that Americans prefer 75% to 10% not to enter into an emission-reduction scheme that doesn't include nations like China and Brazil. Still Killing Jobs Monday, December 14, 2009 In his economic speech yesterday, President Obama made it clear that his administration will take a step forward on job creation. Unfortunately, it's also taking three steps backward -- which all adds up to more unemployment. Senator Barbara Boxer Compares Abortion to Viagra Thursday, December 10, 2009 This is the latest drivel in the health care debate brought to the Senate floor by Barbara Boxer this past Monday in response to the Nelson Amendment, a proposal "to ensure that no federal funds are used to pay for abortion." The Democrats' Assault On Seniors: Wrecking Medicare To Save Obamacare Thursday, December 10, 2009 In an interview on my radio show Wednesday, Arizona Senator Jon Kyl underscored the fact that Senate Democrats do not have the 60 votes they need to pass Obamacare, and that reports about the inevitability of Obamcare passing are part of the Democrat's strategy. (The transcript of the interview is here.) Kyl asserted that Harry Reid routinely announces, and then the MSM echoes, statements about the inevitability of the bill's passing, but then reality catches up. Obamacare: No Friend to People With Disabilities Tuesday, December 8, 2009 I have had great sympathy with the problem Obamacare has posed for people with disabilities. On one hand, many are terribly under-served by the health care system. On the other hand, I believe Obamacare will lead to explicit rationing of expensive patients, which will one day include people with disabilities. It could also one day support assisted suicide ... CEOs and ObamaCare Monday, December 7, 2009 One lesson that Democrats learned from the failure of HillaryCare in 1994 is that they had to buy the silence, if not the outright support, of the business class. They've done this brilliantly by peddling the illusion that ObamaCare will "lower costs" for employers. Oh to be an illegal alien under Obamacare... Tuesday, November 24, 2009 Keith Hennessey calls this "unfair." The gentleman has a gift for understatement: Under Leader Reid's amendment, in the year 2019 about 16 million U.S. citizens would be uninsured and be forced to pay a penalty tax of almost $800 per year. About eight million illegal aliens would be uninsured and would owe no penalty tax. Both groups would get their health care through a combination of out-of-pocket spending and use of uncompensated care in emergency rooms and free health clinics. The Coming Deficit Disaster Monday, November 23, 2009 President Barack Obama took office promising to lead from the center and solve big problems. He has exerted enormous political energy attempting to reform the nation's health-care system. But the biggest economic problem facing the nation is not health care. It's the deficit. Recently, the White House signaled that it will get serious about reducing the deficit next year—after it locks into place massive new health-care entitlements. Joe Lieberman slams public option, brushes off critics option Thursday, November 19, 2009 Sen. Joe Lieberman’s threat to filibuster any health care bill with a public option could kill health reform this year — and embolden Democratic challengers who’d like to send him packing in 2012. But Lieberman doesn’t seem worried. Anti-Obama, Pro-America Wednesday, November 18, 2009 President Obama chose not to travel to Germany for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Instead, he graced the occasion with a video address. He didn't have time in his two-and-a-half minutes to mention Ronald Reagan or Margaret Thatcher or Pope John Paul II. But somehow he did find time to mention Barack Obama ... Boxer-Kerry Cap-and-Tax Hides Costly Mandate Wednesday, November 18, 2009 Under the direction of Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-Ca.), the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee passed its Boxer-Kerry cap and trade national energy tax bill in early November by an 11-1 vote -- right before the week-long Veterans’ Day break. The seven Republicans on the committee walked out of the markup, refusing to participate in the process saying they hadn’t been given adequate time to read the massive tax bill. Imagine that. ObamaCare won't be what it seems Monday, November 16, 2009 This morning's newsletter from the Heritage Foundation raised a number of valid concerns regarding Obama's plan for health care. Most interesting (and alarming), however, is the great discrepancy between Obama's promises and the reality before us. Here's what Obama said ... Dodd, At It Again Friday, November 13, 2009 Sen. Chris Dodd's proposed overhaul would replace the Federal Reserve with a "super regulator" to oversee the banking and financial industries. Will it work? Consider the source. The U.S. House of Presumptuous Meddlers Wednesday, November 11, 2009 As an American, I am embarrassed that the U.S. House of Representatives has 220 members who actually believe the government can successfully centrally plan the medical and insurance industries. I'm embarrassed that my representatives think that government can subsidize the consumption of medical care without increasing the budget deficit or interfering with free choice. Democrats' Pearl Harbor Attack on Health Care Tuesday, November 10, 2009 So confident was Speaker Nancy Pelosi in her party's leviathan health care reform measure that she had the House debate and vote on it in the dark of night on Saturday. Doing so may end up dooming her party in next November's midterm elections...and beyond. Report: 237 millionaires in Congress Monday, November 9, 2009 Talk about bad timing. As Washington reels from the news of 10.2 percent unemployment, the Center for Responsive Politics is out with a new report describing the wealth of members of Congress. Among the highlights: Two-hundred-and-thirty-seven members of Congress are millionaires. That’s 44 percent of the body – compared to about 1 percent of Americans overall. Dems Shred The Constitution House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer says it's constitutional to mandate insurance coverage. Congress, he insists, has "broad authority" to make us buy things to provide for the "general welfare." Democrats' Alice In Wonderland interpretation of what they consider to be a "living Constitution," where words mean what they say they mean based on political considerations, gets more bizarre by the minute. HHS: ObamaCare would make costs go up Does the official HHS website include their latest study of ObamaCare along with their propaganda links? Not so far, but the AP picked up on the new analysis, which shows that far from containing costs, the proposals for health-care reform on Capitol Hill will actually increase costs, thanks to an entirely predictable response from people with new health insurance ... Climate Assumptions From Another Planet As the 821-page Kerry-Boxer climate bill gets fast-tracked in the Senate as a companion to the 1,427-page House bill, it is critical we re-examine the assumptions behind cap-tax-and-trade legislation. The Environmental Protection Agency, Energy Information Administration and other optimistic analysts claim America can limit and tax hydrocarbon use, and switch to "ecologically friendly" renewable energy, with minimal harm to families, businesses and jobs. The Seduction Of Lindsey Graham According to most conservatives in South Carolina, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has officially gone over to the dark side. Under the guise of 'bipartisanship,' Graham has signed on to one of the left's most ambitious plans to impose a socialist agenda in America - government control of the formerly free market through implementation of cap-and trade, the 1,400 plus page Waxman-Markey bill approved earlier this year by the House. Democrats Seek Illegal Immigrant College Tuition Colorado Democrats plan to take another run at a bill that would provide reduced tuition to the children of illegal immigrants by creating a new class of tuition that would not require state subsidies. Sen. Paula Sandoval, D-Denver, said the measure, billed as the "Workforce Development and Unsubsidized Tuition Act," is a compromise that would avoid the pitfalls of the four or five previous failed attempts at passing legislation by creating a new, third tuition rate. The Self-Censorship of Liberals: It's Too Scary to Look When the BBC finally ‘fessed up last week to the Global Warming Fraud -- without admitting how much they aided and abetted the scam over ten years or more -- a liberal gent I know was shocked. He had sort of gritted his teeth and tolerated my skepticism over the years, but he never wanted to judge the whole fraudulent business for himself, although he had plenty of qualifications to do so. But this fraud was obvious. You had to want to close your eyes not to see it. I say that with all appreciation to the scientists and bloggers like Anthony Watt, who doggedly did the hard work of double-checking the fraud. Where's the Health Care Bill? As you read this, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and officials of the Obama administration are in a room at the Capitol rewriting health care policy. The American people aren’t invited. Only a few lobbyists, Obama czars and liberal Senators have even been allowed to see this bill. Bad news for Sen. Dodd Voters overwhelmingly say government ethics is the No. 1 issue today, even ahead of the economy. The new findings come at a time when 43% of voters say the president is doing a poor job addressing government ethics and reducing corruption, up five points from early September and the highest level measured since he took office. Obama’s Olympic failure will only add to doubts about his presidency There has been a growing narrative taking hold about Barack Obama’s presidency in recent weeks: that he is loved by many, but feared by none; that he is full of lofty vision, but is actually achieving nothing with his grandiloquence. Chicago’s dismal showing today, after Mr Obama’s personal, impassioned last-minute pitch, is a stunning humiliation for this President. It cannot be emphasised enough how this will feed the perception that on the world stage he looks good — but carries no heft. Opinion Pages: 1 2 |
